Kirah walking!

New pictures of Kirah

What's New

Kirah is still in physical therapy once a week. The therapist has her working on steps and lifting her feet up when she lifts her leg. She is working towards her short term goal of 10 ft. Unfortunately, she is still very unstable on her feet and any little nudge will knock her off her feet. The therapist has found a game that Kirah likes to play. She has her take little, spikey, plastic animals and stuffing them into a little hole in the middle of a wooden step. She has Kirah stepping up on the board to put the animals in. If Kirah tries to step up with her left leg, she still collapses because her leg is not stable enough.

She has had her occupational and speech therapy evaluations. It was determined by the therapists that she does need the therapies. It was discovered that in addition to the hypotonia (excessive looseness and instability in the joints) of her left hip, she also has it in her fingers, wrists, and elbows. In addition to this, she confirmed that Kirah has quite a few sensory deficits. The therapist is going to try to work with her on that. With her speech issues, they estimate that she will be in therapy for about a year. They say she has difficulty processing speech, and therefore, it affects her ability to show speech output.

Other than that, she loves watching the Sprout channel on tv.

One of her favorite people is her grandpa. When she is around him, she follows him everywhere and likes to sit on the counter and dry dishes. I have gotten her to help with putting her toys away. She really is "Mommy's little helper".

When she sees paper and a writing instrument, she wants to scribble on the paper, but I have to watch her very closely because she will try to eat whatever it is she is writing with. I have seen her try to eat all kinds of things she shouldn't--crayons, paper, plastic--she really is like a little goat, unless it has to do with real food. She now will eat pasta and cheese ravioli, if they are the real thing--no canned!

She can point to her nose, ears, hair, eyes, tummy, and feet when asked. She likes to rub things, and will ask for me to put lotion on her belly for her to rub in.

We have been working on identifying animals and their sounds. Until just the other week, whenever we would ask her what a kitty says, all she would do would be mouth the word "meow". Then, all of a sudden, she started making this noise, kind of like a soft screeching noise, whenever we would ask that question. That is her interpretation of a meow.

Recently, she decided she wanted to be independent and proceeded to put her hat and scarf on, all by herself. She tries really hard to put her shoes on by herself, but isn't too successful. All normal toddler stuff :)

The big news is that she will be turning 2 n November 8! Just a mere couple weeks away. We decided we will be having a small celebration within our family. I decided I wanted to get her a Mrs. Potato head and the little potato head puppies. Her therapist said they would be a good activity for her.

So, lots of stuff going on, but that is what makes it fun.
